Democrats Falter
Even though Bush has yet to veto the Democrats are showing signs of caving to Bush’s demands. The War Funding bill, which would require Bush to start troop withdrawal October first, hasn’t even reached Bush’s desk yet, and several Democrats have begun discussion of the bill’s next incarnation. One incarnation of the new bill would take a giant leap backwards in the fight to bring the war to a close. Instead of establishing a set, binding timetable for withdrawal of US forces, the new bill would included a set of nebulous benchmarks by which the Iraqi government’s progress would be judged. If the benchmarks were not met, then certain types of aid to the Iraq government would be cut off. Bush and his brood would likely veto this bill, because they feel that removing aid would hinder the government’s ability to get back on its feet. Another incarnation would be to only fund the war for a few more months. While this might look like a good idea, it would only result in a revisit of the current situation. It seems that the best course of action would be to not give an inch to Bush and his cronies. I urge whoever reads this to send some kind of message to the people in office and show our support for ending the war. Now is the time to act, before the Democrats completely cave to Bush’s demands. United, we can help strengthen our people in office.
