Mission Accomplished? For Real?
Four years ago on May 1 was when Georgie President Bush played dress-up and landed on a giant ship in the middle of the ocean right near San Diego. The banner behind him read “Mission Accomplished” and he said this:
My fellow Americans:
Major combat operations in Iraq have ended. In the battle of Iraq, the United States and our allies have prevailed. (Applause.) And now our coalition is engaged in securing and reconstructing that country. In this battle, we have fought for the cause of liberty, and for the peace of the world.
So the question is, what exactly was the mission? And did they accomplish it?
If it was to topple the government and grab secure the oil, then yes. If it was to topple Saddam, yes. If it was to give billions of dollars in contracts to their corporate friends, yes. Congratulations on a job well done!!! YEAY!!! (Now, why are you still there?)
But, if the purpose was to find WMD’s, then no, they didn’t accomplish the mission. If it was to bring democracy to the middle east, no. If it was to make the world safer, no. If it was to find Al Qaeda, no. (They weren’t there then.) If the mission was to fight terrorism, no. To punish Saddam for 9-11 (which he had nothing to do with), also no.
Hmmm.
So should I congratulate Bush or ask him to re-define the mission. Or just ask him to get our troops out of Iraq.

Good show, Cassie. I should point out that while Saddam was clearly a monster, he was OUR monster. The US backed the coup which put him in power and constantly supported him until AFTER the invasion of Kuwait (seems George I changed his mind after assuring Saddam that it was OK). We even sold him (with Rumsfield brokering the deal) the chemicals he used to gas the Kurds.
Applause, YEA!!! You are so right on!!! Excellent writing.
Definitely troops out of Iraq. Say it over and over to as many people as you can. Commander Codpiece has lost his credibility, his war, and now he needs to lose his job.
Now he’s warning the Dems not to ‘test his will’ - as if it’s about him and his toughness, instead of hundreds of thousands of dead people. Such hubris and delusion is staggering.
In short form, of course it was about the oil. If it had been humanitarian concern for the Iraqi people, the US would be in Darfur putting a stop to the genocide there; if it was about fighting terrorists, we would never have RELEASED airline bomber Luis Posada Cariles in Miami. No, short term, it was to control the oil of Iraq, and long-term, to control the oil of the entire region. We should congratulate YOU on the clarity of your vision. Be of good cheer, and keep up the good work.
