Here’s a Novel Idea…

Why don’t we kill three birds with one stone, fix both our immigration woes, the bad economy of Canada, the U.S. and Mexico simultaneously, and stop the Mexican sweatshops with one, final motion? America should take initiative and set up an American Union, like the EU. We would be able to have smoother immigration talks, shut down the maquilladoros (sweatshops owned by residents of the U.S., right on the U.S.-Mexico border), and our economy would grow stronger than it ever has been. We need to create stability at home, and unity causes stability.
Look at what has happened with Europe; they formed the EU, and the value of the euro is higher than the dollar, and gaining every day. They are a much greener continent than the U.S., there are much less sweatshops, and the tackle issues with a realism that is unheard of in American government. Plus, it should be even easier for us, since we only have three countries to unite, when the European Union had to bring together twenty-seven.
In addition to the first three reasons, making an American Union would free southern Mexico from the grips of the drug lords, and give the Mexican government a much better chance, with our help, to end the fighting. It would give all of northern America the drugs that it needs from Canada, without congress saying that it would ruin our economy; it would actually help our economy greatly! We would be able to make a more effective checks and balances on the government itself, and keep the power centered and even. It might even bring an end to the embargo of Cuban goods!
I’m going to e-mail this article to my local congressmen, I’m going to send it to the president, and I’m going to start a petition to get this idea to the senate, and I’d greatly appreciate it if you would wait a little while for me to make an online petition.

You seriously think that some globalist union would somehow fix all of our problems? Our economy is fine where it’s at, having two whole countries dragging it down does not seem to be a good idea to me.
Two countries weighing us down? Mexico is full of struggling masses that would love to do a lot more jobs than they already do. Canada has a great supply of medicine and game to hunt, and we can definitely gain from both of the countries. Also, our economy is not fine where it is. Both Europe and Asia are moving at a pace far too great for us, and our lead on Europe’s economy has dissolved into nothing. We need to jump-start our sleeping economy, and unity is the best way to do that.
Dragging us down they both are oil expoters Mexico has gold, silver, oil and chocalate as exports they could easily raise their minuim wage and increase the average person there’s standard of living but the Mexican government is pennywise and pound foolish. Either they raise their living standards or America will be forced to send troops there in another stupid war to stop a commie government from being our neighbor. Canada though might be wondering about us dragging it down.
Commie government in Mexico? What? It doesn’t matter what Mexico exports, having a virtual third world country where third world people can legally move into America because of a union with Mexico is not going to help us. And there are simply not enough working class jobs to fill in North America to put Mexico’s population on the right track. Canada has a great supply of medicine? You’re a universal health care sort of person, obviously. Sorry, but it doesn’t work. I saw you were kind enough to leave a comment on my blog’s Islam article, I recommend my “Just Say No to Universal Health Care” one if you want some of the cons of being like Canada.
A point that Jon Stewart made on his show recently: we entrust the Government with bombs, but not with health care? What the crap, even the current government is good enough to control some small amount of helping to pay for health care! Why should someone not educated in medicine, in a cubicle 500 miles away decide weather you are thrown into the poor house or not?
Well, I suppose if you get your political knowledge from Jon Stewart and haven’t actually examined the problems with universal health care it makes sense. There are government health care programs, Medicare and Medicaid, they made a great system very messed up by getting the government involved and Bush is trying to fix it with HSAs while Dems want to make it worse by doing what we did to get it this way on a larger scale.
The government is already involved in health care, it’s called Medicare and Medicaid. You have to examine the situation more closley and not get all your information from ‘Sicko.’ Before Medicare/Medicaid came around, we had the best system in the world. And now Bush is fixing that, only to have Dems try to mess it up again on a much larger scale.
Commie government yes if Mexico keeps underpaying their workers then I’m sure Mexico will join the emerging crop of countries with Lefty leaders in South America like Venuzula, Ecuador Brazil, Cuba etc who don’t trust the world bank or Washington’s ideas about how to grow an economy. It seems Milton Friedman’s free market economic theories really don’t work. Because Mexico is so close America will send troops plus they have oil. However Mexico can afford to pay their workers more mdvp because they have exports that are valuable Mexico only seems like a poor country because the rich don’t pay their workers much. So the smarter ones come to America if we tell Mexico no NAFTA unless you pay your workers lets say for arguments sake 2/3 the American minium wage then more Mexicans would stay in Mexico. That should adress your concern about Mexicans coming here and taking jobs just like the Germans Irish, Poles, Chinnese Hmoung etc. By encouraging/forcing Mexico to treat their workers like America treats its workers we help ourselves as well as help them a game theory win. Plus we avoid having to send troops in the future to protect the oil from Commies. Never mind Healthcare we could do that without Canada, but we do need their oil A shared currency with Canada would ease some of Canada’s concerns about getting paid for oil in our declining currency as opposed to China’s money which is way undervalued. Assuming there is another war in the mideast (I know what are the odds of that happening but please hummor me for the sake of argument) and oil prouction there drops or is cut off. Then the oil in countries like Mexico and Canada becomes subject to a bidding war a bidding war is not someplace a country with a declining currency wants to be.
Sorry, commented twice. I suppose you can just delete the better one, ahem, one you want, though.
We really don’t need Canada’s oil if we’d just kick out China and drill in the Gulf and kick out the hippies and drill in Alaska. Mexico is perhaps the most non-communist country in Latin America at the moment. If I were running Mexico, I would not agree to that. There is rampant crime, atrocious living conditions, and not such a great economy put up against ours no matter how much chocolate they sell. What you basically don’t get in this is that a US-like nation is not ideal for it’s citizens. Our citizens would do well to live as Mexicans and appreciate what they have rather than never being content despite living in the one of the best nations in the world in terms of economic success for all citizens.
Medicare and Medicade suck! They leave people high and dry at the time when they can’t usually hold a full-time job.
When have I endorsed them? I said hey completely screwed up a good system by gettting to government involved. And now, the Universal Health Care fanatics want to make it worse by getting the government more involved rather than letting Bush’s HSAs work, which they have been.
mdvp We already drill in the Gulf, Alaska there is one known oil field we don’t drill in, but kicking the Chinnese out of out of Canada’s oil sands wouldn’t that require seizing private property from its legal owner? Mexico a non commie country hmm? workers so oppressed their willing to go to a country were they don’t speak the language and are accused of speading leprosy by Lou Dobbs . Didn’t the Great Commie General Trotsky flee to Mexico when he was running from Stalin because it was the country furthest from Russia/ safest place for him? Lots of Lefty Spaniards imigrated/fled in terror from right wing Dictator for life Fransico Franco of Spain who was supported by Hitler during the Civil War.
Benefits of a Union with Canada and Mexico America will finaly go metric and I will only need one set of wrenches. Traffic signs will all be standerized in english spanish and french. Mexico would get better labor laws America would get better cheaper healthcare for everyone. Then I would stop worrying about all the moms to poor to go to the doctor working in restaurants ON MY FOOD when their sick. Moms only call in sick when their kids are sick this has to stop they keep infecting their customers and coworkers we need paid sick leave for everyone as well as healthcare. Americas FBI could go nuts on the serial killer in Juarez, Mexico and Canada could force us to give up the death penalty. Canada could give us the BBC News all the time and not just when the public radio stations feel like it. Mexico would be forced to export some decent Chorizo to the Seattle area. This list is off the top of my head and silly at times but a list of pros and cons would be a good idea.
Medicare and Medicaid do NOT suck. They are under-funded, but they provide basic health care for many millions who would otherwise have nothing.
Also, too much privatization and a drug plan to serve the pharma companies and not the patients, but these are things that can be fixed and addressed.
I don’t get it. You conservatives say that you want to spread justice, freedom and democracy all over the world, but when there’s a place like Mexico that really needs help, is deeply connected with us and is our neighbor, you don’t want to go just because they won’t give us as much oil, and there won’t be a war. Helping our neighbors is the right thing to do, and it would help millions of disadvantaged people. I’m Jewish, but from what I can tell from Christianity, this would be a very Christian thing to do. Ohhhhhh! I said the C-word, does that convince you?
Helping our allies and fellow human being close to home is the moral thing to do, and you should be ashamed for not wanting to help them, even if you think that there are no economic or social advantages (which there are). Don’t be so selfish, because there are people that desperately need public welfare for health care. There are people in Mexico that lead horrible lives in sweatshops, just miles from cushy American homes. Check the label on your clothes, the proof is there! There IS a place where we would be greeted as liberators, and that place isn’t off in a third-world country where we will have to sacrifice America’s youth. It is right here, close to home, and it could be a liberation where anyone can help without even signing a contract that would retain them indefinitely in the army.
Also, I didn’t mean that the system sucks for Medicare and Medicade, I just meant that its execution begins to suck when we take badly needed money from old veterans to make new ones.
Anyone who would call Calderon a commie has not even th rudimentary grasp of Mexican politics I do. Again, I can only say that you have to check this: http://mdvp.wordpress.com/2007/06/19/just-say-no-to-universal-health-care-yes-to-hsas/ out to see my argument against universal health care. I never said anything about Mexican oil, I said Gulf of Mexico, China’s there, and we’d be fine without other countries’ oil if we went there and Alaska, which offer huge oil opportunities among others. I have heard that we have enough oil in Texas alone, and this is as far as scientists are certain, and will probably be more, to fuel America for the next 100 years. A union with Mexico will drag down the US economy, there is no doubt about it at all. Help the people there, but it’s ridiculous to join them or let them all into the US.
Calderon stole an election he’s PAN the Christ War party. I never called him a commie but I did imply that if leftist fleeing Franco and Trotsky of all people felt safe going to Mexico then yeah there must be a reason they chose to go there. You said drill in the Gulf I said we already do. If China does eventually slant drill then that is a matter for a court but has it happened yet? You can’t condem countries for possible crimes they may commit until they do it. You may have heard we have enough oil in Texas alone to fuel America for 100 years but a few years back my Dad was helping update an 80 year old coal plant in Texas. Why would Texas need coal plants if they were self sufficent in oil at any time in their history? By the way there are no oil burning power plants in America anymore if Texas had enough oil I’m sure the Power companies would have leaned on them to drill it. Drilling for more oil in Texas would have been much cheaper than changing all the oil burning plants in America to run on coal or natural gas. By the way many Europeans felt the same way about letting in former comunist block countries into the European Union as you feel about Mexico. Today Estonia with their flat tax is one of the fastest growing economies in Europe. East Germany is I believe the largest producer of solar cells in the world. I hear good things about Slovakia, Lithuiana, and Lativa. The European Union insisted they adopt balanced budgets and a host of labor and enviromental laws as a condition for membership it took over ten years but it has worked out quite well.
