discrimination at hospitals

Well THIS is hardly fair!

ER docs give whites narcotics more often

AP - Emergency room doctors are prescribing strong narcotics more often to patients who complain of pain, but minorities are less likely to get them than whites, a new study finds. Even for the severe pain of kidney stones, minorities were prescribed narcotics such as oxycodone and morphine less frequently than whites.

  1. Give the minorities, who by the way, are white, all the drugs they need. I am sick of this discrimination bullshit. Get a life people.

  2. Seems that only race was taken into account, not the context of the actual patient and condition. I doubt that a middle-aged african-american of average dress who has kidney stones complaining of severe pain would be denied pain meds in any scenario. However, what would you do if you were an ER doc and some early-twenties hip hop kid complete with gold chain and matching tooth comes in saying his foot hurts? Same as if Cletus and Brandine venture out of the trailer park and pop into the ER on a Friday night with some bogus claim to be in pain wanting strong meds. It’s a shame that in many cases the accusations of denial of meds based on race is probably true, but if context were taken into account the numbers would likely be too low to make this newsworthy in the first place.

  3. I am getting sick and tired of these race-related studies, which do nothing to promote racial equality, and instead create controversies where none exists. Statistics taken for studies like these do not tell the entire story, rather they paint the entire process with one broad stroke, which makes it seem as if discrimination exists.

Let’s stop creating nonsense and lighten up a little.

  4. I am sick of people saying racism dosen’t exists. Well it does. I am a black 47 year old. I dress well and a mother and grandmother. I am like by all races. I have fibromyalgia, there are times that pain level gets up so high, that I can’t walk move or any thing but cry. The sad part is that when this happens I have nothing to take for it because one of my old doctors has label me as being addicited to pain killers. Well pain killers work. They have put me on other meds. that made me sicker then I need it to be. The out come a new doctor and afraid to take meds. So tell me wht I have a white freind who husband went to the E.R. for a ear ach and they gave her husband two different types of pain killers. So tell me that is not bull.

  5. […] week, FrecklesCassie at YOUTHinkLeft noted the discrimination against blacks in U.S. emergency rooms when it comes to the availability of pain medications, but the problem appears far more serious. […]

  6. Avis, I also have nerve and muscle pain. My doctors are good about giving me medication, including darvocet, but I must “pee in a cup” once a year so that they know I am not adding anything besides what they give me. Can you perhaps find a different doctor?

  7. All of you guys bring up such interesting arguements on why these so called doctors are discriminating against minorities. i have been to the hospital for a kidney stone and i know how much pain they caused and for anyone to get denied pain killers when they are actually are in pain it sucks. but there are ways to tell if a person is actually in pain it just costs more money like an xray or a catscan. say i complain of a hurt foot, i can take motrin or a heavy type of ibprofuen to help that. but i still think if freaking rediculous that just because the rumor mill says that black males are the ones who abuse drugs if you look it up it actually reports that whites are more likley to abuse them it just goes unnoticed in the eyes of america because rasicm is still alive. Im writing an essay on this so if anyone can respond to me or let me know what they think that would be great!
