Magic Number: 935

According to a newly released study by two non-profit journalism groups, President George W. Bush and seven of his top aides made 935 false statements about the pre-war risk Iraq posed to the United States. Astoundingly, that is only the number of false statements documented after September 11, 2001. The study not only fingered President Bush, but also top officials, including Dick Cheney, Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice. The search was conducted via a searchable database of government documents, such as speeches and transcripts, and quotes from major media outlets. The report even went as far as to reprimand media outlets for not attempting to validate the claims made by the government officials.

The breakdown:

*Bush himself made 232 false statements about Iraq and Saddam Hussein possessing weapons of mass destruction and 28 false statements about Iraqi connections to al Qaeda.

*Colin Powell had the second highest total with 244 statements about weapons of mass destruction and 10 statements about terrorist connections.

*Donald Rumsfeld and Press Secretary Ari Fleisher had 109 false statements.

*Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz had 85 false statements

*Condoleezza Rice made 56.

*Dick Cheney had 48.

*Finally, Scott McLellen made 14 false statements.

  4. Hmm the Righty Blogs have not come up with but here is the number of Lies Bill Clinton said yet? Either Bill didn’t lie that much or the Righty blogs are lazy this is a Great Catch on a news story Cass .
We just need some more blog coverage on this story to get Bush to say sorry I was wrong on TV, I know small chance of that happening or we announce this story in front of impeachment hearings!
Even with no impeachment hearings just having this information so easily available to everyone will make it hard for GOP rewritters of history like Bobo Brooks to ignore.
Bush is in Presidential Legacy mode now he is worried about how history will view him and this story can’t be helping him sleep at night.
