gay debate

Today during my social studies class, we had a debate over the Supreme Court case, Wade vs. Boy Scouts of America. In the case, a man that had been in boy scouts for 12 years, earning the coveted rank of Eagle Scout, began to tell people that he was gay. because of this he was kicked out of the boy scouts. He took them to court on the grounds that they had violated his rights, but they got away with it because they were a private business and the said it was against the “morals and values” they were trying to instill on the boys in the program.

During the debate, the teacher asked which side the class thought should win, the vote was 32-2 against the gay man. This shows that even though people say that children these days look past sexual preference, gender, race, and ethnicity, it still is not equal. During our debate, many of the children took the grounds that the gay man would sexually assault the children. I don’t think that a lot of people get the difference between a gay man and a pedophile — just because someone likes someone of the same sex does not mean they are rapists. Even though I am straight, I still do not want to rape every female I see. There are differences. I also doesn’t help that the church is speaking out like they do against gay marriage. In the news, more kids have been sexually assaulted by straight, married preachers and members of the church, than by any gay/lesbian person. Therefore, I think that we should seek to educate people more about these differences, instead of just speaking out against them, many of the people in my class knew nothing more about gay people than what has been broadcasted over the news, or what people make jokes about.

  1. I think the boy scouts were wrong. But if it makes you feel anybetter my teacher had the same talk with my class about the ERA Equal Rights Amendment to the Constitution to get woman equal rights.
Me and most of my class was against it at the time, but over time I at least have changed my mind.
This country is moving Left it takes generations but it is happening. A Woman and an African American are now fighting to be President in my day they would have been fighting to get a job that involved wearing a tie. (In the 80’s woman’s suits had shoulder pads built in so they would look more like guys). I know that some woman had good jobs before that but they were mostly on tv. The masses of professional women seemed to me at least to appear in the 80’s . I’m hoping that Gays get accepted sooner than that.

  2. I wish all teens were like you!

  3. How do you think that kids’ opinions can change? What would help?

  4. Was the voting done in public or by secret ballot? I wonder if that would affect the results.
When I was in the Boy Scouts, our troop leaders were mostly WWII veterans and I think it made a difference. We were much more outdoorsy and not political at all. Recently, the church of the LDS has become a much more important sponsor to the BSA (like about a quarter of the funding) and have had much more to say about the running.
About the vote, never underestimate the power of ugly and of fear and intimidation.
