Dress Codes and Hair

Now I am glad that my school isn’t as restrictive as Desert Wind School in Socorro, TX. There, an 8th grader is missing prom and graduation because of highlights in her hair. Not purple highlights. Not 5 foot long extensions. Just highlights.

Texas at its Stupidest

I am sure that the legislators in Texas know that needle exchanges are much safer for drug addicts and for the public, but they’d rather act all judgmental towards addicts and the people who live near them. Sometimes I hate Texas! What is it like to live in a state that cares about the people?

Texas’ […]

miseducation

This is TAKS week here in the Texas schools. As a 10th grader, I take four tests this year. Some years we take two and other years three or four, but this is the big year that determines how well our school does compared to other schools. For us as students, every year matters because […]

Proud of Texas and Texans

Sometimes I think I live in an entirely backwards state that does more harm than good. Other days I read stories like these that make me proud to be a Texan:

El Paso denies feds access to road for border fence
from HoustonChronicle
EL PASO, Texas — The country’s largest border city has decided to block efforts […]

On Prisons and Prisoners

I write about prisons and prisoners a lot, so you might never know that it’s a really hard subject for me to write about, but it is. It’s not just numbers and statistics and information; it’s family. My mom is in prison, on drug charges, and would be much better off in a drug treatment […]

Why Hillary?

YouTube - Link to: Hillary Ad using Ann Richards

Dan Solis from ThinkYouth  (who is formerly one of our editors and founders) sent me this video along with this note:
If this doesn’t get you motivated to endorse Hillary on your blog, I don’t know what will.
I gotta admit, this video made me tear up a bit. Have […]

Do kids in foster care have rights?

I think this seems like a pretty good idea. Everyone should have rights and everyone should know their rights.  A bit surprising that the newspaper article doesn’t actually say what the rights are.  What do you think?

Texas drafts bill of rights for foster children
Similar list of rights failed in 2007 legislative session.

Texas prisoners and the telephone

This is only good news AFTER I figure out how to block calls. But I guess it is good for other people.

Texas the last state to give inmates regular phone privileges
from HoustonChronicle
For the first time ever, Texas prison inmates will soon be able to pick up a phone and reach out to family and […]

Helping Poor Students in Texas Schools

Good for these parents and these students! I know that I have gone to all great schools, much better than a lot of them in Texas. You should be able to get a great education even if you are poor, and I hope these families win their lawsuit.

Governor Perry is an idiot about terrorism

Why is it that the newspaper quotes politicians or any people without fact checking or making them justify their opinions. If Governor Perry wrote sentences like the following on a paper in my history class, he’d get a 50 for failing to provide any evidence at all for his opinions. But the […]
